REPAIR PURE WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

This design-build project upgraded and replaced the pure water distribution system at Piers 5000, 5002, and 5003. The new system replaced the existing hoses with 316L stainless steel piping and supplied pure water to all three piers, including a connection at the existing Pure Water Plant. The new 2-inch pure water piping system included both pure and flush lines that ran along various surfaces including trench, utilidor, quaywall, and pier-side, including adjacent to the composite fender piles.  These configurations required a variety of pipe supports, rope guards, anchors, and hangers to achieve successful installation.  The upgraded system included multiple risers on each pier, all serviced by new pure water system pumps and an automated pump control panel. The work also included electrical, sewer and potable water modifications requiring new pipe, catch basin, and tie-in to existing systems as well as incidental AC paving replacement and concrete repair work. The design-build team also developed and implemented a stormwater pollution prevention plan and environmental plan to address intertidal and sub-tidal habitat that has historically supported eelgrass and shorebird foraging, known to nest in these piers.
