This project required the rebuilding of the pile and pile cap systems under Wharves 6, 6½, and 7 due to sagging of seismic structural damage of the piles and pile cap system. The existing shot-crete covered woodpile system was replaced, where necessary, with piles specifically designed to withstand the large deck loads. After new pile caps were installed, jacks were used to slightly raise and shim the deck, preloading the new support system. Damaged concrete batter piles were repaired with special steel reinforcing sections, and new 48″ piles were installed in other areas.
The structural repair work was performed by working down through holes cut in the existing deck and from below the deck working off platforms and boats. The pile driving program consisted of driving 90 48″ piles ranging in length from 55′ to 90′ and 1,000 12″ piles, up to 125 feet in length. A pile cap system of reinforcing steel and concrete was used to support the existing deck. All pipes and structural steel were coated with Nova’s corrosion resistant glass flake coating prior to installation followed by patching deck holes.
Work included construction of a new 75,000 square foot warehouse facility on Wharf 7, which was a building within a building. The two-story administration offices were built as a stand-along building, and the warehouse facility was built around it. Once the existing warehouse was demolished, repairs to the pile and pile cap system under Wharf 7 were completed.
