The Navy needed to expand it’s existing berthing capability for homeported CVNs, and the project provided a new wharf that would allow for maintenance on the vessels. The project was awarded to Nova Group and R.E. Staite, a joint venture, with Nova as the managing joint venturer.
The key components of the project include:
- Construction of the new 1,400 LF concrete wharf supported by a combination of steel and concrete piles
- Installation of new utility systems on the wharf
- 2,497 SF extension to portal crane system
- Construction of a new 25,000 SF CVN warehouse and a 2,500 SF pre-engineered laydown building
- Construction of a rock dike, comprised of 85,000 cubic yards of quarry run material, or the equivalent of 140,000 tons of rock and over 40,000 cubic yards of sand
- Construction of fish habitats made of recycled concrete debris from project demolition of Pier J/K
