This new military Type III 2,400 gallon-per-minute (GPM) pressurized hydrant fueling system included 155,000 SF of new PCC concrete apron, a new 2,400 GPM pumphouse, two 10,000 barrel (bbl) fuel storage tanks with fixed cone roofs, floating pans, and concrete liner containment, 19 hydrant control pits, and 10,000 linear feet of 12 inch stainless steel piping including extension of an existing loop. Expansion joints were used on the piping to and from the aboveground storage tanks.
Other new features include a hydrant hose truck checkout and a truckfill stand. This new fuel system installation required phased work in a controlled airfield. The pumphouse construction consisted of a new structural steel building complete with four Union 600 GPM pumps, seven M.E. Industries fuel filter separators, CLA-VAL control valves, General twin seal plug valves, and a Bay Associates programmable PLC system. A 4,000 gallon product recovery tank and standby generator were also installed.
The Nova fabrication shop prefabricated structural steel supports and spooled all aboveground piping. They also manufactured hydrant pits, isolation pits and high point vent and low point drain pits. Nova self-performed in excess of 60% of the contract including all mechanical, electrical and concrete work.
